Karşıyaka Children Friendly Spaces Inventory

This change project aimed to create a database and a mapping platform to list and show all public places within the city, for example parks, playgrounds, museums, etc. The platform furthermore categorized these places with various child friendliness criteria, which led to a more accessible, safe, and creative environment for children. The future aim of the project is to start working towards the creation of child friendly spaces by increasing the number of them, and to ensure a balanced distribution throughout the district. The project implementation has shaped the investments that the municipality will implement in the future, in line with the data to be obtained and the demands from the citizens.

Game Street

In Istanbul, the Parks & Recreation Departments mission is to plan an urban green infrastructure that includes active and passive recreation opportunities, sustainable green spaces enriched with sports, cultural and recreational activities, as well as energy-efficient public spaces. Aligned to this plan, this change project aimed to approach, maintain and operate these spaces for current and future generations.


Green Buildings

This change project aimed to increase the renewable energy usage capacity in the public buildings of Buca Municipality and to provide energy and water efficiency with solar energy systems as well as rainwater collection applications by creating a good pilot example. Citizens receiving service from Buca Municipality Işılay Saygın Youth Center and Sustainability and Innovation Center (children, youth and students visiting the pilot area) constitute the primary target audience.

Inclusive playground in the kindergarten

The aim of this change project was the inclusion of children with social disabilities with the goal of no one being left behind. The targeted groups were children with different disabilities in social life and the wanted outcome of the project was that children in kindergarten don’t feel excluded from the play environment. Challenges and future steps include planning, co- designing and sharing good practices for vulnerable groups in other municipalities.

Watch and Learn

This change project focused on culture and nature through an outdoor educational curriculum (interactive lessons on place) for all 5th grade students from one specific school in Ohrid.  

The project also had a second phase with workshops, uniting students and their parents by together working on illustrations and other crafts where the subject of expression are locations of places with natural and cultural importance, visited previously through the interactive lesson in the first phase of the project. In the end, all project participants were awarded a “Certificate for Guardian of the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Ohrid”.

Revitalization of Lapangan Merdeka Pariaman through Stakeholder Engagement

The function of Lapangan Merdeka has been used for various activities. As a place for exercising and playing, the square has yet to meet the safety and health indicators due to the absence of appropriate infrastructure and measurement to support them. It also lacks facilities for disabled access.

This change project involved elementary and senior high school students to convey their ideas about revitalizing the public space. In addition to that, other stakeholders were also invited to deliver their ideas. The first immediate output of the project was the increase of stakeholders’ awareness about needing to build an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable public space. The second output was the improvement of the legal status of Lapangan Merdeka.

We want a clean city (youth perspective) at Dok 2 beach Jayapur

Country, City: Indonesia, Jayapura – Papua Province

The residents of Jayapura want to have a clean public space that they can enjoy. This change project was aimed towards the younger generation, a group who can contribute to keeping their city clean by themselves and by the assistance and collaboration with stakeholders.

The concrete result of the change project was new information available in front of Dok 2 Beach and Papua Governor Office where a board now gives information related to the age of decomposition of waste to the public. Some further steps for the change project involve creating a simple survey for people who come to the beach in order to further inform the public, as well as arranging the standard operational procedure (SOP) for the Garbage Bank of Jayapura Municipality with Paul’s Junior High Students school.
